Even toddlers need to know what's happening during divorce

The end of a marriage is tough but having to get your kids through it is often more difficult. They may not be old enough to understand why mom or dad isn't living in the same home any longer. They might not understand why you argue or can't spend time together.

It's not easy to raise a child and go through a divorce at the same time, but it's possible to make the situation easier on your child. Even if your child is only 1 or 2 years old, there's a potential to have a small conversation about divorce and what's happening in an age-appropriate way.

Parents play an important role in their children's lives

Never forget that you and your spouse both play an important role in your child's life, even if you no longer want to be a part of your marriage. Your child relies on both of you to raise them well, to teach them and to support them.

Is it really important to talk to a young child about divorce?

Yes, it is. It may be more important than discussing it with older children, in all reality. Why? Your family life is going to change, and your child's routine will, too. That isn't going to be easy, but by talking your child through the changes before they happen, you can make a difference. For example, if your 2-year-old child will be staying with dad tonight instead of with mom, all you need to say is that both parents live separately but that mom will be back the next day and that dad is there tonight.

Divorces can be complex, but your situation doesn't have to be. Good communication can make a difference.
