With summer on the horizon, you may be looking forward to spending more time with your child. However, before you get too excited, you may want to review your parenting agreement to ensure that you know what you can and can’t do.

Here are some co-parenting tips that can help you have a more enjoyable summer with your child:

  • Give the other parent advance notice of your plans. For example, if you’re interested in taking your child on vacation, talk about this as far in advance as possible. Springing the idea on the other parent at the last minute can result in an argument.
  • Be flexible. Since there will be times when you ask the other parent for flexibility, such as when taking a trip, you should feel comfortable taking this approach yourself.
  • Open the lines of communication. When it comes to co-parenting, there is nothing more important than communication. It doesn’t matter how you communicate, as long as you have a system in place for doing so. Some parents use technology, such as text messages and email, as they know this will help avoid arguments. Others, however, prefer face-to-face communication and phone calls.

You don’t want to get in the way of your child’s summer fun. For this reason, it’s time to think long and hard about your approach to co-parenting and the things you can do to ensure a more enjoyable summer for all parties. With your parenting plan guiding you, it shouldn’t be difficult to make decisions that work in the best interest of you, your child, and the other parent.
